Vision Zero Was supposed to be a fantastic long-term goal for the city, with the hopes of zero traffic deaths by 2024. However, San Francisco has been plagued with traffic fatalities and serious injuries, particularly when it comes to pedestrian incidents. At Allegiance Law, our knowledgeable and experienced San Francisco pedestrian accident attorneys want to discuss a particularly dangerous intersection and a recent incident that left a 21-year-old man in critical condition.
In early February, a 21-year-old man was crossing the street at 19th Avenue and Junipero Serra Boulevard when he was struck by a sedan in the early hours of the morning. He was transported to the hospital to be treated for serious injuries. The driver of the sedan who struck him, a 57-year-old, remained at the scene of the crash.
This incident took place in what is called the city’s “high injury network.” Streets in this network account for just 13% of the total city streets but are home to 75% of all collisions. Walk SF Executive Director Jodie Medeiros said in a statement that “The intersection where he was hit is notoriously dangerous with fast-moving traffic.” This area is in the middle of where a 65 mph highway transitions into neighborhood streets.
So far, in 2020, at least one pedestrian, one motorcyclist, and two drivers have died in traffic incidents. The number of these incidents does not seem to be going down, and the Vision Zero initiative is not making nearly as much progress as it should. Without serious help and funding from city leaders, San Francisco will never meet the goal of zero traffic fatalities by 2024.
When we turn to the latest reporting year of data from the California Office of Traffic Safety, we can see that there were 811 pedestrian fatalities and 15,200 pedestrian injuries across the state. These numbers eclipse every other state in the nation.
Pedestrians are vulnerable to injuries in any traffic collision. They have very little protection from the force of an impact from a vehicle that weighs thousands of pounds, and it is not uncommon for our San Francisco pedestrian accident lawyers to help clients who have sustained the following:
Each of these injuries can lead to tremendous medical bills. In many cases, pedestrian accident victims are permanently disabled and are unable to return to work or enjoy their daily lives.
