Two weeks ago, people around the 1400 block of Taraval Street were in for a surprise when a vehicle crashed into a building. The two passengers in the vehicle were hurt, one with serious injuries.

This is one case in which the pictures look worse than the actual injuries, which were all thankfully not life-threatening. Looking at the photos though, we can see just how much potential there was for bodily harm.

We can see that this happened at an “all-way” stop and that the vehicle had to go across a sidewalk before hitting the building. How many people could have potentially been hurt?

  • Other vehicle passengers
  • Pedestrians on the sidewalk
  • People inside the building

At Allegiance Law, we know this incident highlights some of the dangers that people in and around the city face each day. If you need a San Francisco pedestrian accident attorney, you can count on us to be here for you.

Pedestrians are the most vulnerable group on the roadway. When they get struck by a vehicle, they are usually caught off guard and have made no attempt to protect themselves. Unfortunately, there are not many ways a person can protect themselves from the force of a vehicle that weighs thousands of pounds.

Injuries from pedestrian accidents are often severe and lead to major medical procedures and long-term rehabilitation. The cost of this care, along with other hidden costs associated with accidents, can quickly become overwhelming.

One of the main concerns we often hear from clients is what to do about their lost income when injuries prevent them from going to work. Insurance companies may not cover this. Where do people turn?

During California’s latest reporting year, there were over 14,000 pedestrian crash injuries and 867 people lost their lives in pedestrian crashes.

Why They Happen

In a survey of California drivers, we can see what their main safety concerns are on the roadway:

  • Speeding/aggressive driving
  • Drunk driving
  • Texting on phones
  • Talking on phones

Their main concerns are based in reality.

  • Speeding is the number one cause of accidents in the state.
  • Drunk drivers were responsible for 27% of traffic fatalities in the latest reporting year.
  • Distracted driving is still a growing problem despite laws meant to curb it.

Regardless of how a driver’s negligence causes a crash, they should be held accountable when they injure another person.
