On September 20, 2020, one motorcyclist was killed, and two were seriously injured when two separate motorcycles struck a disabled car in the slow lane on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a BMW sedan was stopped and disabled in the slow lane of westbound traffic on the bridge just before 10 am on Sunday, September 20. That was when a group of motorcyclists were traveling in the lane and struck the disabled vehicle. Most of the motorcyclists were able to change lanes and get around the vehicle, but two cycles struck the rear of the BMW. The rider of one of the motorcycles was thrown off of the bridge and into the San Francisco Bay. His body was later recovered by the US Coast Guard. A driver and passenger on a second motorcycle were taken to the hospital for treatment of major injuries.
The driver and passenger of the BMW had previously left the disabled vehicle and were walking west on the bridge at the time the incident occurred.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, we can see that there were 488 motorcyclist fatalities and 13,969 motorcyclist injuries caused by collisions during the latest reporting year across the state.
